THE VIEWING GUIDE

Internet speed and IPTV: get a smoother picture

Understand connection quality, household traffic and why a wired test can tell you more than a single speed-test result.

Match expectations to the source

The bitrate of the programme and the way the provider delivers it determine how much capacity a stream needs. There is no universal IPTV speed requirement. Ask your provider for the requirement of the channels and quality levels you plan to use.

As a separate streaming-service example, Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K. Those are Netflix’s own recommendations, not guaranteed requirements for IPTV streams. Leave room for other people and devices on your network.

Why a fast connection can still buffer

A broadband package’s headline speed is different from the connection reaching your television. Weak Wi-Fi, interference, a busy home network, device limitations or a problem with the source can interrupt playback even when a speed test looks healthy.

A useful five-minute check

  1. Test the same stream at the time you normally watch.
  2. Pause other large downloads and uploads.
  3. Restart the player, then your router if needed.
  4. Try Ethernet or move closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
  5. Test an alternative channel or lower picture quality.

Change one thing at a time so you can see what helped.

Allow for simultaneous viewing

Every active stream shares network capacity with calls, games, cloud backups and other devices. Your internet capacity and your subscription’s active-stream limit are separate constraints. More broadband speed does not add extra subscription connections.

Know when to ask support

If one channel fails while others work, report the specific channel and time. If all channels fail, check whether the player can refresh the account and whether the subscription is active. Avoid assuming that a VPN or a new player will solve every problem.
